Tenuta Le Potazzine

Tenuta Le Potazzine

Potazzine is the italian word for very colorful and vivacious birds which inhabit the Tuscan countryside. In Montalcino, grandparents and parents alike often use Potazzine as a term of endearment for children. In fact, it was their maternal grandmother who affectrionately gave this nickname to Viola and Sofia who are the daughters of Gigliola Giannetti.

The link with the two Potazzine not only features in the name of the winery, but also in its entire evolution. It was created in 1993, when Viola was born, and expanded by a further two hectares in 1996, when Sofia came along. This brought the total area registered for the production of Brunello and boasted by the estate today, to five hectares.

The estate consists of five hectares of vineyards registered in Brunello, three of which are located in the proximity of the winery, 507 meters above sea level, with an age average of 14 years.

The rest are located in the area of Sant’Angelo in Colle, about 420 meters above sea level, implanted in 1996.

The training system is guyot with a density of 6000 plants per hectare.

Harmony, finesse and cleanliness are the keywords of the wines of Le Potazzine, which can rely on the company’ skills in assembling the elegance ad aromas of the grapes grown in the west, in the locality of Le Prata, near the winery, with the structure of the bunches cultivated further south, near Sant’Angelo in Colle.

The aim pursued right from the first vinification at Le Potazzine, was to make wine in the most natural way possible, seeking balance, elegance and outstanding personality.

This is obtained with natural fermentantions, thanks to indigenous yeasts, which, together with long macerations and ageing in medium-sized Slavonian oak barrels, in compliance with the tradition, for both Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, create the fundations for the creation of wines with smooth tannins that are never harsh, with a tangible and recognisable style that reveals absolute finesse.

The Company has always been used for the aging of their wines, Slavonian oak of Garbellotto company, from 30 to 50 hectoliters.

Brunello usually aged in barrels 40 months, the Brunello Riserva, produced only on vintages 2004, 2006, 2011 and 2015, rests in wood for about 60 months, while our Rosso di Montalcino remains there for 12 months, even if the product specification does not provide any kind of aging.

Description

“Le Potazzine does not make a Brunello Riserva all that often, but when it does, you are virtually guaranteed to find something memorable in the bottle.”–Ian d’Agata, Vinous

Vinous – “The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva captivates as it slowly blossoms in the glass, but this is a wine that is truly worth waiting for. With each swirl, a bouquet of mentholated cherry, autumnal spice, shaved cedar and Tuscan dust gains amplitude and richness. The textures are undeniably elegant, communicating opulence while also stimulating the senses with salty minerals and an inner smokiness that I find wildly compelling. An intense array of red currants, licorice and savory spice fills the senses and translates directly to the finale, where regal tannins saturate, promising a remarkably long life. I didn’t think it was possible for Le Potazzine to outdo their 2015 annata, yet they truly have.”

Only 3,000 bottles were produced.

CRITICAL ACCLAIMS

“Aromas of crushed mint, pressed rose and perfumed berry mingle with warm spice in this dazzling red. Thanks to some of the highest vineyard altitudes in the denomination, it boasts vibrancy and finesse in its flavors of ripe black cherry, juicy blood orange, licorice and crushed mint. Taut, elegant tannins and fresh acidity keep it balanced and focused. Drink 2025–2032.” —Wine Enthusiast

“The ladies of Le Potazzine make a terrific bottle of Brunello, and their high-elevation vineyards are especially important in maintaining freshness in a scorching-hot vintage such as this. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino offers a pretty succession of wild berry, cherry and plum aromas, along with light spice, crushed flowers and perfumed potting soil. This wine is also distinguished by a touch of bay leaf and maybe a warmer note of cured tobacco as well. This is an impressive effort (with 16,000 bottles released).” —Wine Advocate

“An exotic mix of sweet smoke and cloves gives way to dusty black cherries and a twang of sour citrus as the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino unfolds in the glass. Further time reveals hints of animal musk and flowery undergrowth. This enters the palate with pure elegance, delicate and silky in feel, yet also delivering a core of salty minerals that adds unexpected depths to the vivid display of tart wild berries and inner spice. The 2017 finishes with incredible persistence but also poise, structured yet primary, exactly as it should be at this young stage. Keep your hands off for at least a few years, because the best is yet to come. The higher elevations and no-nonsense winemaking at Le Potazzine really aided in creating one of the most balanced and, frankly, interesting wines of the vintage.” —Vinous

Description

PHILOSOPHY: always ambassadors of the Montalcino tradition, aimed at reflecting the elegance of the pure Sangiovese, through long spontaneous fermentations, that in 2018 lasted 42 days, carried out only by our native yeasts, without the control of temperature. Then the wine is aged for 42 months in big 30/50 hl barrels in Slavonian oak. Not filtered.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: The 2018 started with a fairly regular winter, not very cold but even mild as is happening in the last years. We got some snow and regular rains during the springtime, but what really characterized the 2018 have been the rainy days in August. Almost every afternoon was rainy, this meant leaf-removal during the month, that together with the wind typical of our high-altitude location, allowed the bunches to remain very healthy. Then a beautiful September, marked by good thermal excursions, leading to a perfect ripeness of the bunches.

PHILOSOPHY: a Rosso di Montalcino intended as Brunello youngerbrother, coming from the same vineyards, whose we declass almost half of the production. In 2021 undergone a long, natural fermentation of over 50 days, carried out only by our native yeasts. Then the wine was aged 12 months in 30/50 hl barrels in Slavonian oak. Our Rosso is not filtered.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: the beginning of the year was marked by a rainy and mild winter, who led to an early-budding.Then, an unexpected drop in temperatures around mid-April has resulted in a couple of freezing nights: despite that, the frost didn’t affect our vines thanks to the constant breeze typical of our altitudes, which keep the vines dry and a gentler temperature. The summer that followed was very dry, but some proper showers at the right time and perfect climatic conditions during the month of September allowed the grapes to reach an excellent phenolic ripeness.

PROFILEThe grape variety is very easy to detect starting from the nose, which is truly classic for Sangiovese: red cherry, plum, spices and Mediterranean scrub. This 2021 edition presents a tannic structure as dense as it is gentle, which alongside acidity, does not sacrifice, on the contrary it supports drinkability

Description

WEATHER CONDITIONS: the beginning of the year was marked by a rainy but mild winter, which led to early budding. Subsequently, an exceptional and unexpected drop in temperatures around mid-April gave rise to some freezing nights. Fortunately, our vineyards were not affected, thanks to the constant ventilation typical of our altitudes, which keeps the plants dry and at a less extreme temperature. The summer that followed was very dry, but the opportune mid-August rains, together with the perfect climatic conditions in the month of September allowed the grapes to reach perfect phenolic ripeness.

VINIFICATION AND AGING: in 2021 the spontaneous fermentation was very long, having lasted for 50 days in stainless steel, thanks only to our indigenous yeasts and without temperature control. Subsequently, the wine was aged for 8 months in stainless steel tanks and for a further 4 months in the bottle, before being placed on the market.
