San Polino

At San Polino we believe that all life on this planet is linked by a single thread, forming a myriad of wondrous interconnections which encompass all of us at San Polino: the people who work here, the animals, the plants, the insects, the people who come to visit us, our importers abroad and the people who buy and enjoy our wines wherever they may be in the world.

We hold that the qualities of balance, harmony, elegance and structure which make an aesthetic object of a wine are but the simple portrait of the balance, richness, and harmony present in each of the ecosystems necessary for the production of that wine.

These ecosystems are dynamic, complex, and exciting. At San Polino we wish to gain a deeper insight into how these ecosystems interplay and influence each other. We want to know their effects on the winemaking processes. That is why we invite research teams to the estate; geologists, botanists and entomologists, ornithologists, and yeast experts. The better grasp we have of the complex natural world of the ecosystems in our vineyards, the better we can make our wines

At San Polino we believe that harmony in nature creates excellent wines.

Description

A cold winter was followed by a mild spring, with adequate rainfall. Summer arrived hot and early, and the vines became very vigorous. Grapes ripened uniformly, albeit quite fast. In late summer, however, hot, dry days followed by cold nighttime temperatures slowed the ripening down, and ensured the quality of polyphenols and acidity. We harvested at the beginning of October.

Description

A cold winter was followed by a relatively fresh spring, with occasional rainy spells, and balanced temperatures in the summer, with great temperature variations. Occasional bad weather never compromised the grape quality, but rather provided the plants with the perfect amount of rainwater, and led to no significant issues. A combination of fresh and dry nights in late ripening allowed to achieve a perfect maturation.

Description

A particularly cold winter was followed by a breezy and rainy spring. In the summer the temperatures were close to ideal, punctuated by occasional rains which kept the plants at an optimal stress level. The ripening proceeded at a gentle pace, and low nighttime temperatures in late summer ensured a perfect expression of polyphenols in the grapes. Harvest began in early October, under great weather conditions, with sugars, acidity, and polyphenols all having ripened to perfection.

Description

Although the winter was particularly harsh, the vineyards did not suffer from any frost damage, and the spring started with cool temperatures and abundant precipitations. As summer drew closer, the temperatures rose above average values. The summer of 2017 was very hot and dry. Whilst the plants did suffer slightly, our high altitude ensured constant ventilation and the all-important fresh night temperatures. The rain finally arrived in September, allowing the grapes to ripen under near-optimal conditions.

Description

A relatively rainy spring allows the plants and soil to recover a strong vitality, following the previous year’s dry conditions. Due to these conditions, much work was required in the fields to keep the exuberance of both the vines and the vineyard ecosystem under control. August is hot, but not to the extreme levels of previous years, and the grapes ripen correctly. Harvest takes place at the beginning of October, the grapes are healthy and beautiful, with correct sugar levels, high acidity, and relatively high concentration.
